How Keanu Reeves Looked After John Wick 4 Breakout Star On Set

Rina Sawayama, who makes her movie acting debut as Akira in John Wick: Chapter 4, reveals how star Keanu Reeves looked after her on set.

John Wick: Chapter 4 star Rina Sawayama reveals that costar Keanu Reeves made sure she was looked after on the set of the new film. After the success of the first three installments, Reeves’ titular hitman returns for John Wick: Chapter 4, this time looking to take down the High Table. In addition to bringing back regulars like Ian McShane’s Winston and the late Lance Reddick’s Charon, the sequel also introduces a host of new characters, among them Sawayama’s Akira, the concierge at the Osaka Continental Hotel.

In a recent interview with USA Today following the success of John Wick: Chapter 4, Sawayama reveals that Reeves was a kind ally on set. Not only did he make the first-time movie actress feel comfortable in the new environment, but he also helped out when she sustained an injury while filming. Check out Sawayama’s full comment below:

“[Reeves] knew that it was my first movie and looked after me a lot. I threw out my back during the first week and he made sure that everything was available for me to get better.”

How John Wick 4 Sets Up Akira’s Franchise Future

The John Wick: Chapter 4 ending seemingly concludes the story of Reeves’ assassin, but the post-credits scene suggests that Akira’s story could just be getting started. After Wick takes refuge at the Osaka Continental early on in the story, the building is subsequently attacked by the Marquis’ (Bill Skarsgård) small army. Caine (Donnie Yen) kills Akira’s father, Shimazu (Hiroyuki Sanada), during the attack, and Sawayama’s character is clearly eager for revenge.

While the story thread is seemingly left hanging when the credits start to roll, the post-credits scene sees Akira approaching Caine through a crowded square in Paris before brandishing a knife. The scene cuts to black and leaves both characters’ fates up in the air, but Stahelski recently revealed that an alternate version of the scene clearly showed Akira killing her father’s murderer. Whether she kills him or not, however, there’s clearly more story to be told when it comes to Akira.

John Wick franchise future could either see Akira fail to assassinate Caine and subsequently work towards this goal, or follow her after she kills Caine and deals with whatever fallout comes from that decision. Conversely, it would also be interesting to see Caine and Akira forced to put their differences aside and team up to confront a greater threat. Caine, after all, did try to spare Shimazu during their fight. It remains to be seen what is next for Akira after John Wick: Chapter 4, but Akira could provide an interesting character to follow in her own spinoff.
