The Real Reason Angelina Jolie Took On Her Role With Johnny Depp In The Tourist
Although Angelina Jolie had a blast working with Johnny Depp, she took on the role in The Tourist for different reasons.

We’ll take a look back at the 2010 film and how everything came to be. Although Jolie had a blast working with Depp, she was first to be cast in the film, without knowing about Johnny’s involvement.
In truth, she had criteria prior for taking on the role. We’ll find out exactly what that was.
Angelina Jolie Had A Blast Working With Johnny Depp
The reviews for The Tourist were average at best. In addition, given the location and cast, it was not a cheap shoot, with a budget of $100 million. Given its star power alone, the film was able to turn a profit, bringing in $278 million at the box office.
The exciting prospect was seeing Jolie and Depp together on the big-screen for the first time. Given her words with IGN, Jolie stated that the two got along right at the start.
“Oh, he’s just such a nice guy. You walk into someone’s office and you see what’s important to them. He’s got lots of books and lots of pictures of his children. So it’s immediately somebody you feel at ease with. He’s a real, experimental, deeply feeling artist, who gives a lot and tries a lot and is very gracious on set to everybody.”
Jolie would further reveal that she did not expect Depp’s tremendous humor. According to the actress, the pair wasted a lot of time shooting due to Depp’s silliness on-set.
“There’s some footage floating round, which I’m surprised hasn’t surfaced… God, there was a good 20 minutes, half-an-hour early on where we could not stop laughing. We wasted a lot of film. And got a lot of producers frustrated. The outtakes of this I’m sure are very funny.”
Working alongside Johnny was a major bonus for Jolie, however, it wasn’t the reason she said yes to the script.
Angelina Jolie Took On The Tourist For The Timing And Location Of The Film
Given her packed schedule and family life, taking on roles isn’t easy for Jolie, and that holds true today given her shifting priorities.
However, at the time, former partner Brad Pitt had a delay in Moneyball, leaving an open window for Jolie to take on a project. In addition, she was interested in the location being elsewhere. The Tourist check off both boxes.
“Honestly, this one came about… I had finished Salt and Brad [Pitt] was to work next and he had a small delay in his film, in Moneyball, and so we had a few months and I questioned if there was anything out there that shot in a great location.”
“That’s the phone call I made! And it was a character I hadn’t done before. Just something new. I got this call that there was this film that happened to shoot in Venice and Paris and it was a real lady.”
Following the decision to take on the project, Johnny Depp was later attached as well. “I was interested and then [director] Florian [Henckel von Donnersmarck] came on board and then Johnny [Depp] and it was just a pleasure.”
Angelina Jolie Might’ve Given Depp Amber Heard Relationship Advice
As we’ve seen in the past, cast members grow close during their time on a film set. This was the case with Jolie and Depp. According to the National Enquirer, Jolie was also giving Johnny relationship advice at the time, during his days with none other than Amber Heard.
“Angelina Jolie is giving romance advice to old pal Johnny Depp warning him he may be making a big mistake marrying Amber Heard,” the publication stated.
“Angie is worried [Depp] is going through a midlife crisis and has become enchanted with the much-younger actress,” the source also said.
We hope Amber Heard did not hear about this rumor, given that she’s a huge fan of Angelina Jolie. Nonetheless, looking at the way things played out, Jolie was clearly looking out for Johnny’s best interests.
