Matrix: Resurrections Images Highlight Keanu Reeves’ Neo Return

Multiple teaser images from the fourth Matrix movie, officially titled Resurrections, show Keanu Reeves' highly-anticipated return as Neo.

New images from The Matrix Resurrections highlight Keanu Reeves’ return as Neo. After years of speculation, Warner Bros. finally announced a fourth Matrix movie in 2019 with original stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett-Smith reprising their roles from the original trilogy as Neo, Trinity, and Niobe, respectively. Although Laurence Fishburne won’t be returning as Morpheus, it has been speculated that Aquaman and Candyman’s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will be taking on a younger version of the iconic character. Lana Wachowski returns to direct for the first time without her sibling, Lily.

The upcoming Matrix film will also feature new characters played by Neil Patrick Harris, Jonathan Groff, Priyanka Chopra, Jessica Henwick, and Christina Ricci. However, it has been speculated Groff will be playing a younger version of Agent Smith, a role originally played by Hugo Weaving. So far, there have been a few different looks at these characters, including Matrix Resurrections footage that aired at CinemaCon, which shows Harris as Neo’s therapist and him reuniting with Trinity. However, he has no memory of his past. Now, another look at the franchise’s lead star is here.

The Matrix Resurrections recently launched their official website (WhatIsTheMatrix), which creatively presents users with the choice between a red pill and a blue pill, and then plays footage from the upcoming film. User p0rtman87 collected more than 40 stills from the footage and posted them to Imgur. The most exciting of the bunch is seeing the face of the franchise, Keanu Reeves, back in action as Neo. Check out the first look at him below:

Due to all this recent promotional content, Neo’s storyline in Matrix Resurrections is becoming more apparent. After his death at the end of the last film, Neo is back inside the matrix and is now going by his birth name, Thomas Anderson, and appears to have no memory of his identity as The One, though he has visions of events from the original Matrix trilogy. This is all that can be parsed from the promotional campaign thus far.

The official website confirms the first trailer for Matrix Resurrections will be dropping tomorrow, September 9, so perhaps more will be revealed about Neo’s storyline then. Between the website and a Matrix Resurrections billboard in Liverpool, which announced the news of the trailer, the film’s promotional campaign has been quite clever. It will be interesting to see if The Matrix Resurrections can keep it up from now until its release on December 22.
